WYOMING – Winter storms and sudden schedule changes kept the Sublette County boys’ swim team on its toes during a busy weekend.

The team rose to the challenge and scored a 108-50 victory against Kemmerer in Big Piney on Thursday, Jan. 7. Due to weather, Lyman and Lander were unable to attend.

Sublette County won eight of 11 events on Thursday.

Big Piney senior J.T. Day scored a win in diving, tallying 141.35 points

Big Piney sophomore Ryen Hacklin scooped up gold in the 200 individual medley, finishing the race in 2 minutes, 45.43 seconds. Hacklin placed second in the 100 breaststroke at 1:26.85.

Owen Nielson, a junior at Big Piney, won the 400 freestyle, clocking in at 4:14.69.

Sublette County teams beat Kemmerer in each relay. Andy DeClue, Day, Hunter Scott and Nielson picked up first place in the 200 medley relay, timing in at 2:10.70.

Day, sophomore John Ruby, freshman Calleb Willson and Hacklin scored a win in the 200 freestyle relay at 2:09.44.

The 400 freestyle relay came down to the wire. Nielson, DeClue, Hacklin and Scott edged out the competition by four-tenths of a second to take the win at 4:32.33.

Scheduled to compete in Cody on Friday, road closures over South Pass forced Sublette County to change plans. The coaches made several calls and were invited to participate in the Green River Invite where Sublette County took fourth place with 208 points.

Highlights included a third-place finish by Nielson in the 200 individual medley at 2:29.87.

Declue, Hacklin, Nielson and Day took second in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:50.26.

Weather once again interfered with plans to travel to Powell on Saturday and the team competed at Evanston Invite.

Scott, Willson, DeClue and Nielson came in second place in the 200 freestyle relay at Evanston, timing in at 1:43.43.

“To say that this week has been a challenging but fun is an understatement,” said coach Kursty Day. “Our boys had a great meet in Green River and most took time off their individual events. On Saturday in Evanston, the divers had their first 11-dive meet. Both J.T. Day and Hayden Flint showed improvements in their diving abilities. The swimmers showed a great amount of grit in their ability to compete three days in a row and dropped times or stayed consistent with current times. I am very proud of the swimmers and divers.”

“With some quick adjustments in location, we were able to swim against some great competition,” said coach Ambr Seemann. “True grit was shown by each and every one of our swimmers and divers over three days of competition.”
