Susan Ruth Young passed away in the early morning of Oct. 4, 2022, in Pinedale from a sudden neurological illness. Susan was born in Orange County, California Aug. 11, 1942, to Thomas Marion and Ruth Evangeline Flippen. She was the oldest of four daughters. The Flippen family moved from Southern California to the Central Valley of California in the mid-1950s where Tom started farming citrus and table grapes. Susan loved all things horses and had many a story.
Susan graduated from Dinuba High School in 1960 and earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Fresno State University in Home Economics. Susan went back to college at night and earned a Master of Science Degree with Distinction in Educational Counseling in 1992 from National University.  Susan met James (Jim) Young at a Christmas party thrown by friends and they wed on April 15, 1967. Susan was a supportive wife of a very busy high school agriculture instructor and FFA advisor. Jim and Susan raised three children, Shelly, Brian and Jennifer.
Susan worked various jobs including manager of the Dinuba Chamber of Commerce, director at Self Help Enterprises where they helped low-income families with housing and finally retired from being a community college counselor at Reedley College.
Jim and Susan made a home in the country just outside of a small town called Monson raising quince trees and other varieties of tree fruit. They also developed an expensive hobby of raising and breeding cutting horses which they enjoyed together.
Susan liked entertaining and everything social. She enjoyed playing cards, particularly with her bridge group and pinochle friends. She knew how to win. She always had a jigsaw puzzle out on the table and dabbled in painting and photography. She loved to travel around the world and visited Russia, Iceland, Africa, Canada, Mexico, Central America and many parts of Europe.  When Susan moved to Pinedale in 2012, this community welcomed her in. She enjoyed activities at Rendezvous Pointe, the Museum of the Mountain Man, PEO Chapter BE, Bronx Club and attending Pinedale Fine Arts Council events.
She is survived by her children: Shelly (Bryant) Berry of Dinuba, Calif.; Brian (Terri) Young of Kingsburg, Calif.; and Jennifer (Chad) Hayward of Daniel, Wyo.; seven grandchildren spread between California, Wyoming and North Dakota; one great-grandchild; and younger sisters Christine (Mike) Hoagland of Kansas; Margie Englert of Arkansas and Janet Krugh of California.  She is preceded in death by her husband, James Vernon Young Jr., and parents Thomas Marion and Ruth Evangeline Flippen.
A memorial service will be held in Pinedale on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 4 p.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1 Gooseberry Circle. All who knew her are invited to attend.
Another memorial service will be held in Dinuba, Calif. at a later date. Her ashes will be interred at Smith Mountain Cemetery in Dinuba, Calif., alongside her husband of 44 years.
