Alice Lorene Stacy Griggs, 86, passed away Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022, at Sage View Care Center in Rock Springs, Wyo. She was a lifelong resident of Big Piney, Wyo.
She was born Aug. 7, 1935, in Kemmerer, Wyo., the third of three children, and the only daughter to Clate William Stacy and Ruth Mae Butler Stacy. She grew up on the Stacy Ranch just north of Sawmill Canyon. She spent her early years taking care of lambs and baby chicks, occasionally being chased by an ornery goose.
When she was old enough to go to school, she and her mother moved to town managing what is now the Big Piney Hotel. She attended school in Big Piney, and was a 1953 graduate of Big Piney High School. She worked for Helen’s Dress Shop for many years and drove school bus for Big Piney schools for five years. Alice then worked for the Town of Marbleton, Wyo., for 26 years, having retired in 2005 as the town clerk.
She married Richard Lee Griggs on June 3, 1952, in Pinedale, Wyo. He preceded her in death in 1978.
Alice was a member of the Community Congregational Church in Big Piney, Wyo. She was a Sunday school teacher, a leader for Camp Fire Girls, a participant in Tree City, U.S.A., a clerk for the sheriff’s department and a member of Wyoming Association of Municipalities. She took great pride in her grant writing. She was also a board member and clerk for the Plainview Cemetery Board for 19 years and played a big role in the team effort for the completion of the Plainview Cemetery Veteran’s Memorial, after which she retired in 2012.
She was a cat lover who enjoyed taking care of plants and flowers, bird watching and country music and dancing. She loved the outdoors and mountains.
Survivors include her daughter Gaily Mae Griggs Gray of Rock Springs, Wyo.; one granddaughter Noah Lee Gray of Rock Springs, Wyo.; three great-grandchildren Taylor Nicole Gray of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Greyson Scott Gray and Kaliahna Herring of Bunnell, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Griggs, two brothers, Charles Stacy and William Stacy, and one grandson, Brandon Gray.
A graveside funeral service will be held Friday, Jan. 14, at noon at the Plainview Cemetery in Big Piney. A reception will follow the service at the Big Piney Community Congregational Church.
